BACKGROUND

Do It Right! Learn the Appropriate First-aid for Snakebites.

First Aid Course for Snakebites (FACS) is a specialized first aid course open to the public. FACS is a public outreach program by Remote Envenomation Consultancy Services (RECS) and Malaysian Society on Toxinology (MST). It is organised with the collaboration of KL-EXOPETZS and CODE 3 EMS, and various other organisations/institutions. The general purpose of FACS is to provide awareness and guidance to the general public about the species of dangerous venomous snakes in Malaysia and the consequences if a person is exposed to snakebites. FACS emphasizes on the provision of appropriate and timely first aid and at the same time avoiding interventions which could cause more harm to the patient prior to arrival at a hospital. This course is organised in response to the many misconceptions, misinformation and wrong practices being taught and applied by the Malaysian public and healthcare practitioners/responders. FACS also encourages the appropriate and safe health-seeking behavior among the Malaysian public.


OBJECTIVES / LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • To be aware about the dangerous snakes in Malaysia.
  • To be aware of what to do after a person is bitten by a snake.
  • To be able to perform the appropriate first aid to a snakebite victim.
  • To be aware of the important information to provide when a snakebite patient arrives at the hospital.
  • To be aware of what happens when a snakebite patient reaches the hospital for treatment.
